Disneytoon Studios is seeking a Head of Story for a Theatrical CG production.  In this role, the candidate will aid the Director(s) in elevating the film’s storytelling by growing sequences from the script, making them more poignant, funny, compelling and original by deepening the characters through visual details and actions.  Reports to Producer and Director(s).
 
Responsibilities
  • Act as the Director(s)’ story curator, clearly and concisely understanding the narrative the Director(s) wants to tell, and bringing that vision to the screen.
  • Work with the Director(s) and Writer in story development to brainstorm and foster story concepts from the script to be assigned to Storyboard Artists.
  • Act as a creative guardian and ensure adherence to the Director’s vision throughout production.
  • Identify and resolve problems of clarity and quality of drawings in preparation for pitches to the Director.
  • Be vigilant and aware of story problems and lack of story purpose, bringing opinions and pitching solutions to the Director(s).
  • With Director(s), collaborate with Editors, and provide assistance when needed to fix, trim, and cut storyboards into a story reel.
  • Work with the Art Director and Art Coordinator to ensure that Story Artists are working with the latest designs. 
  • Work with the Production Designer and Layout Supervisor as they translate the boards into 3D space. 
  • Help innovate the storyboard process, bringing in new tools and ideas to best translate the story to screen.
 
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years professional experience as a Storyboard Artist on multiple feature length animated films.
  • Sound knowledge of story structure, character development, staging, and pacing.
  • A comprehensive understanding of both cinematic storytelling and how a story department functions.
  • Ability to create action & humor expressed through drawing.
  • Superior ability to create story ideas, to recognize and solve story problems, and to suggest alternate story ideas.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, communicate clearly, present work, and be a teammate.
  • Clear understanding of scheduling deadlines.
  • Must be proficient in the use of PhotoShop.
